Tyrel and Lucas Reeve ... grew up in the world of musicians and instruments. Although they helped their father Dave in the shop from an early age, they didn't decide to commit to the family business until after sampling college and other jobs. Lucas is the varnish expert, and Tyrel has a discriminating feel for wood graduations and bass bars. Together they collaborate on creating exceptional new instruments with a tone and response that rivals the old masters. Dave and Paula are proud that, as 4th generation luthiers, sons Tyrel and Lucas are continuing the family tradition. David L. Reeve ... is a third generation luthier. Born in St. Louis, he learned his craft from his Grandfather, P. C. Bearden, and furthered his studies with many prominent makers and repairmen including the legendary Simone Sacconi. He began making his own violins at a young age, and his instruments are in the hands of many well-known soloists and performers worldwide. His restorations of valuable antique instruments are justly famous for their beauty, structural integrity and tonal excellence. During his travels as a young man, Dave fell in love with the landscape of the West and moved here in 1971. P. A. Heberlein Reeve Paula studied music education and string bass performance at Colorado State University. She fell in love with the violin making world after watching repairs made to her damaged Pollmann string bass. Intrigued by the process -- and impressed that the instrument sounded better after the repair than before it was damaged -- she began her apprenticeship with Dave in 1976. Then they got married and had kids. ![]() |
