There are a number of technical reasons why, but something that is ALWAYS overlooked by other instrumentalists is this:
Music is conceived, structured, heard and played in octaves.
String instruments are tuned in fifths.
(Most bass players tune their instruments in fourths.)
Just imagine trying to play the piano, if the keyboard worked like this:
